Story Behind Motif

Masakali is a Hindi term that refers to something that's free-spirited and innocent. The hand painted bird motif flawlessly reflects the naive and free-spirited birds exploring the open sky.

In Indian culture, birds are known for freedom, wealth and wisdom. From being vehicles for Gods & Goddesses to being their protectors, birds in Hindu Mythology have been depicted in various forms.

Pattachitra

Indigenous to the eastern Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha, the folk art form of Pattachitra is a reflection of India’s glorious past.

The artists - who are called Patuas - have immortalised religious, mythical, and folklore instances in scrolls of fabric.

They use bright bold natural colours and a distinctive art style that is rooted in rural tradition. In a traditional performance, the Patuas unfurl the scroll as they sing their Pater Gaan and mesmerise the audience as they transport them to a land of myth and legends.

Matelli Woodwork

Matelli, West Bengal, is famed for its exceptional woodwork, a true testament to the region's artistic heritage. The artisans of Matelli transform durable local hardwoods like Sal and Teak into stunning pieces of art.

The true marvel of Matelli woodwork lies in its skillfully carved floral and fauna motifs, which capture the essence of the region's natural beauty.

What makes Matelli's woodwork truly unique is the harmonious blend of beauty and functionality. From exquisitely carved furniture to everyday utensils, each item tells the story of Matelli's rich cultural heritage and artisans’ exceptional craftsmanship.
